20K version 20 Johnnie Mae's Home

built while studying at The Rural Studio

Faunsdale, AL

Rural Studio allowed me the opportunity to learn many practical skills. As a team, the 17 of us spent weeks on site and weeks in studio working through design charettes to determine siding colors, ramp design as well as window placement and proportion. While working on the 20K house I performed tasks such as: spacing and nailing purlins, inserting bird blocking, installing metal roofing panels, stapling the radiant barrier to the trusses, running all the electrical, wiring electrical fixtures, designing the kitchen and placing orders for cabinetry, inserting windows, filling studs with batt insulation, installing base boards, painting the walls, installing cabinetry, driving the bobcat to move earth and gravel, drilling for ramp foundation piers, mixing concrete by hand, calculating and measuring column spacing to hold the roof load, laying girders and decking, planting trees, and installing final hardware.
