The public library has recently transitioned to a place of collaborative working and knowledge sharing with internet and book research. A shift in function should similarly shift the way this civic space is designed. Creating one continuous space, using lighting, acoustics and furniture, allows for visual connection. Rather than creating enclosed rooms, curated zones display the range of options available to create and share knowledge to individuals and the community. Providing curated zones for quiet study and vibrant social interactions makes all individuals feel welcome to share in this space and the knowledge it offers.

Visually Connected Zones

Creating zones that curate activity is accomplished through the pairing of focal glow or task lighting with work stations, collaborative tables and lounge chairs. This creates a variety of options for patrons to choose from when moving through the library and selecting their place for that visit.

Pairing a warm wood and soft light is the standard and shows up in the acoustic ceiling panels, walls and furniture choices. The most reverberant zone, the auditorium, fosters movement and interaction through levels and seating variety. A collaborative work zone is formed by tall ceilings and large north windows allowing for a bright, open and vibrant place for groups to study and exchange thoughts. Singular study, paired with task lighting, creates a compressed zone between the stacks for acoustic privacy. Promotion of technological work is zoned by a raised terrace, compressed task lighting and glass walls for acoustic separation. In addition to these specific zones there is a zone provided for quiet group study or less concentrated individual study. Together, the curated zones form one open space, inviting patrons to discover the library as their own.
